Strong & Courageous (Joshua 1)

Scripture: Joshua 1; Psalm 30:11-12; Psalm 37:9-11

Have You not commanded,

Be strong and not afraid?

Have You not instructed,

Your Words are to be obeyed?

From my mouth they aren’t to depart

So I’ll arise and do my part

Don’t turn from them or deviate

Oh day and night I’ll meditate

Strong and courageous You want me to be

Fearless, fully trusting in how you lead

Strong and courageous to guard all You command

Strong and courageous will inherit the land

You’ve turned my mourning into dancing!

You, Yah, only be praised

You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness!

Encouragement of Joshua

1 After the death of Moses the Lord’s servant, the Lord spoke to Joshua^[a] son of Nun, who had served Moses: ² “Moses My servant is dead. Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan to the land I am giving the Israelites. ³ I have given you every place where the sole of your foot treads, just as I promised Moses. ⁴ Your territory will be from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great Euphrates River—all the land of the Hittites—and west to the Mediterranean Sea.^[b] 5 No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or forsake you.

⁶ “Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance. ⁷ Above all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. ⁸ This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite^[c] it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. ⁹ Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Inheritance from Yah

For evildoers will be destroyed,
but those who put their hope in the Lord
will inherit the land.^[c]

¹⁰ A little while, and the wicked person will be no more;
though you look for him, he will not be there.
¹¹ But the humble will inherit the land^[d]
and will enjoy abundant prosperity.

¹⁸ The Lord watches over the blameless all their days,
and their inheritance will last forever.
¹⁹ They will not be disgraced in times of adversity;
they will be satisfied in days of hunger.

²⁰ But the wicked will perish;
the Lord’s enemies, like the glory of the pastures,
will fade away—
they will fade away like smoke.

²¹ The wicked man borrows and does not repay,
but the righteous one is gracious and giving.
²² Those who are blessed by Him will inherit the land,^[g]
but those cursed by Him will be destroyed.

²³ A man’s steps are established by the Lord,
and He takes pleasure in his way.
²⁴ Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed,
because the Lord holds his hand.^[h]
