Deuteronomy 29:16-19; Jeremiah 17:9-10; Psalm 119:142 and 139:23-24; Hebrews 12:6-16; John 3:21 (light)
Our hearts consider ourselves blessed
Though we walk in stubbornness
The heart is wicked above all
We can’t follow it
Prune us, Gardener
And examine our roots
Let them not produce
Poison or bitter fruit
Your correction be heard so nigh
So to share in Your holiness
The ones You love, You chastise
Oh, a blessing in disguise
So, bring lies to the light
Awaken our sight
Show us Your might
That Your Truth is right!
Deuteronomy 29:16-19 (bad roots/idolatry)
16 You saw their detestable things and their idols[a]—wood and stone, silver and gold—that were with them. 17 Beware in case there is among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from YHWH our Elohim to go serve the gods of those nations. Beware in case there is among you a root producing poison and bitter fruit.[b]
18 “Now when someone hears the words of this oath and in his heart considers himself blessed, thinking, ‘Shalom will be mine, even though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart’—thus sweeping away the moist with the dry— [c] 19 YHWH will be unwilling to forgive him. For then the anger of YHWH and His jealousy will smoke against that person. So all the oath that is written in this scroll will settle on him, and YHWH will blot out his name from under the heavens.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 (hearts are wicked and deceitful)
9 “The heart is deceitful above all things,
And [d]desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
10 I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the [e]mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 119:142 (the truth is..)
142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law [His loving instructions] is the truth.
John 3:21 (the light is brought through obedience to His truth/instructions)
19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
Hebrews 12:6-16 (a father chastens his child; chastening is a good thing!)
“My son, do not despise the [c]chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”
7 If[d] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no [e]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or [f]profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
